The biggest fish in the world is the whale shark. It can grow to a massive 60 feet in length and can weigh up to 21.5 tons. The second biggest fish is the basking shark which can reach lengths of 46 feet and weigh up to 7 tons. 


The third biggest fish is the tiger shark which can grow to be up to 20 feet long and weigh over 1 ton.

There are over 32,000 species of fish in the world split into three main groups: jawless fish cartilaginous fish and bony fish. Jawless fish are the simplest and most ancient group of fish represented today by lampreys and hagfish. 


Cartilaginous fish include sharks rays and skates – they have a skeleton made of cartilage rather than bone. Bony fish are by far the largest group and include freshwater and saltwater species such as tuna carp eels and salmon.
